How are Our Donations Used?

The Salvation Army in Birmingham is entirely funded by donations from local private citizens, corporations and other organizations. Due to the generosity of local Salvation Army supporters, nearly 400 people in Birmingham sleep in a Salvation Army bed each night. Because Christmas shoppers at various local retail outlets drop spare change into Salvation Army Red Kettles each holiday season, the homeless are fed and housed and at-risk youth receive education, counseling and accommodation in a safe and enabling environment. Through the donation of clothes, furniture and vehicles to our family stores, 100 men receive support each day in our rehabilitation program and are on their way to recovery. When local television and radio stations donate hundreds of thousands of dollars in broadcast air-time to urge members of the community to adopt "angels" from Salvation Army Angel Trees, the Christmas wishes of more than 9,000 needy boys and girls come true.

The Salvation Army is an international nonprofit agency and an evangelical part of the universal Christian church established in 1865.  All funding is raised locally and then spent locally to meet the needs of its local community.  An administrative fee of 11 ½% is used to fund our regional support staff and our corporate headquarters support staff based in Atlanta, GA.  This support staff assists our local command with services which include Legal Council, Program Supplies, Program Planning Support, Contract Review and Management, Financial Management of our Portfolio and many other services that help us to leverage our local funds to Do The Most Good as we meet the needs of our Community.

If you would like to help The Salvation Army provide hope to Birmingham's needy citizens, please donate now. A dollar donated to The Salvation Army in Birmingham is a gift that multiplies endlessly.
